Governance

Board-level AI governance, made real.

I run CPD-style workshops for Boards and executives on how to oversee Generative AI safely, confidently, and in line with their governance responsibilities.

I am a facilitator for the Institute of Directors New Zealand AI Governance Essentials programme, and regularly work with senior directors and trustees.

I hold governance roles across health, creative arts, and technology, bringing a practical, cross-sector perspective to AI oversight.

My approach

I bring over 35 years’ experience across governance, commercial management, and technology, with work spanning infrastructure through to applied AI. I currently hold several governance roles, giving me a practical understanding of how Boards manage risk and make decisions.

My focus is helping Boards oversee Generative AI in a structured, practical way. This builds on earlier work at FranklyAI®, where I developed real-world AI solutions in Aotearoa, including systems incorporating te reo Māori and Samoan.

These workshops are designed as Board-level capability development. They cover what has changed with AI, where it performs well and where it fails, and what that means for your organisation, including impacts on workforce, services, and decision-making, along with regulatory, privacy, liability, and environmental considerations.

A core focus is governance in practice. This includes how Boards approach AI initiatives, the roles of the Board, Executive, and ICT, and what effective oversight looks like. Particular emphasis is placed on establishing clear Board-level policies on AI use, defining acceptable and unacceptable applications, and setting practical guardrails before AI is scaled.

Directors are also introduced to a small set of useful AI tools, with guidance on how to use them safely in their own role, including note-taking, summarisation, and decision support, while maintaining confidentiality and accountability.

Sessions include a Board simulation exercise to test judgement in a realistic scenario.

By the end of the workshop, Boards typically have a clearer understanding of AI capabilities and limitations, greater confidence in questioning management, defined positions on AI use, and practical policies and guardrails to manage risk and reduce uncontrolled adoption.

I run a half day workshop specifically focussed on the Board's role in AI.  See my training page.
